Gifts for a new car owner: 10 things they will use in the first month

Capsule 33 Classic box open with three 10 ml hanging car perfume bottles

We make Capsule 33, so one gift on this list is ours. The other nine are not, and we earn nothing if you buy them. Prices are in Canadian dollars before tax, as listed by the retailer on October 5, 2026.

Someone you know just got a car: brand new, new to them, or their very first. The best gift is the thing they have not thought of yet and will need by the end of the month. Here are ten, grouped by what they are for, and three popular gifts you should ask about before you buy.

Quick picks

  • Under $20: a Petro-Canada car wash ticket, $16.99.
  • Most useful: a digital tire pressure gauge, $26.99. Almost nobody buys one for themselves.
  • For a first winter with the car: the Garant foam snow brush, $34.99.
  • For a new driver: the MotoMaster Commuter Auto Safety Kit, $49.99.
  • For when the new car smell fades: Capsule 33 Classic, $33.

Keep it looking new

1. Petro-Canada car wash ticket, $16.99

One wash, accepted at more than 260 Petro-Canada car washes across Canada. It fits in the card, it costs less than anything else here, and a new owner will use it within the week. The price can vary by location.

2. Chemical Guys Wooly Mammoth drying towel, $44.99

For the owner who plans to wash the car by hand. A 36 by 25 inch microfibre towel with silk edges that the brand says holds more than a gallon of water. Old bath towels are how new paint gets its first swirl marks; this is the fix. At Canadian Tire.

Be ready when something goes wrong

3. MotoMaster digital tire pressure gauge, $26.99

A backlit display, a small light for dark driveways, and readings in PSI, kPa or bar. Tire pressure drops when the temperature does, so the warning light on a new car often comes on with the first cold week of fall. This tells them which tire and by how much. At Canadian Tire.

4. MotoMaster Commuter Auto Safety Kit, $49.99

Booster cables, a tow rope, a blanket, a first aid kit, a warning triangle, gloves, a poncho and a flashlight in one bag. The right gift for a new driver, and the one parents tend to buy. $49.99 regular at Canadian Tire, and it was on sale for $39.99 when we checked.

5. Garant telescopic foam snow brush with ice scraper, $34.99

The head is foam instead of bristles, so it pushes snow off without scratching the paint, which matters most in the car's first winter. It pivots, and the handle extends to 52 inches for trucks and SUVs. At Canadian Tire.

Make it easier to live with

6. AutoTrends Heavy-Duty Trunk Organizer, $39.99

Removable dividers, hooks on each side so it stays put, and it folds flat when the trunk is needed for something big. Groceries stop rolling around on the first drive home. At Canadian Tire.

7. Scosche MagicMount Select MagSafe phone mount, $29.99

It mounts on the dash or a vent and holds an iPhone 12 or newer by its magnets, with no clamp. A metal ring is included for phones without MagSafe, Android included. At Canadian Tire.

8. Apple AirTag, $39

For the new set of keys. $39 for one at Apple, with free engraving. It only works with an iPhone, so check what phone they carry. For Android, a Tile tracker is about $35 on Amazon.ca.

9. Contigo West Loop travel mug, from about $24

473 ml, stainless steel, with a lid that seals itself between sips, and it fits most cup holders. The brand says it keeps drinks hot for up to 11 hours. A leakproof mug is a kindness to new seats. On Amazon.ca, where the price changes by colour.

Make it theirs

10. Capsule 33 Classic car perfume set, $33

Capsule 33 Classic car perfume bottle hanging in a car

Ours. The new car smell fades over the first months, and a used car arrives smelling like someone else. This is what comes after: three 10 ml frosted glass bottles with beech wood caps, blended and bottled in Toronto. One hangs in the car and the other two stay sealed in the box. Each lasts about three to four months, so the set covers up to a year.

The scent is quiet on purpose. There are three: Do Not Disturb (fresh, aromatic, woody), Suka.blyat (fruity, smoky, woody) and Hurt my Ego (fresh, spicy, creamy woody). If you do not know their taste, the Mix Set has one of each. Delivery in Canada is $9 and takes 2 to 5 business days. See the Classic sets.

Ask before you buy these

Three gifts come up on every list and go wrong often enough that they are worth a question first.

  • All-weather floor mats. The most useful thing you can put in a car in Canada, but good ones are cut for the exact make, model and year. Ask, or give them as a promise to order together.
  • Seat covers. They have to match the seats, and on most modern cars that means covers made for seats with side airbags.
  • A dash cam. A good gift, but people have opinions about wires on a new windshield. Ask where they would want it.

Frequently asked questions

What do you give someone who just bought a car?

Something they will need in the first month and have not bought yet: a tire pressure gauge, a trunk organizer, a phone mount, a safety kit, or a first car wash.

What is a good gift for a first car?

A roadside safety kit with booster cables, a tire pressure gauge and a snow brush. A new driver rarely owns any of them, and all three get used in the first winter.

What is a good new car gift under $30?

A Petro-Canada car wash ticket is $16.99, a Contigo travel mug is about $24, a MotoMaster digital tire pressure gauge is $26.99 and a Scosche MagSafe phone mount is $29.99.

What should every car in Canada have in it?

A snow brush with an ice scraper, booster cables, a blanket, a flashlight and a way to check tire pressure. A safety kit covers most of that in one bag.

Does the new car smell last?

No. It fades over the first months as the materials in the cabin air out. After that the car smells of whatever is in it, which is when a car perfume makes sense.
